My Personal Thoughts of the Use of AI Generated Content

First thing first: I do not intent to use AI-generated thing to make a profit. That’s a shitty thing to do with the current way these tools work. Also, you are free to skip this post, if it doesn’t tickle your fancy or you find it offensive. It’s totally ok. Not everything is for everyone.

I discussed earlier about how I use AI to run a campaign. You can find that post HERE. That post (and everything else in this blog) is in Finnish, but since I have got into conversations about this topic in various groups, I decided to write this one in English. Feel free to use Google Translate if English/Finnish isn’t your language.

The Unrestrained Demon, Source

Every new tool brings forth the discussion of its fair use. It is also natural and traditional to complain about the ”new ways” and how they are going to ruin everything.

It’s just that once these tools are presented to the public, they aren’t likely to go anywhere. This might be a lazy argument, but since we are talking about using AI, we actually need to teach it, so we can try to find a ”good” way to use them. At least I think this is more important than to just trying to deny their existence.

I mean in a hindsight, I wouldn’t argue that the artist of early 20th century were fool of it for creating the collage technique?

Personally t I think I have always been fascinated with creating art in a manner that uses other peoples work. You can see from my DeviantArt gallery that I have painted over MtG-cards, and actually have sold them. Is this ripping of the original artist’s work? More than likely. And still MTG alters are a celebrated art form.

Propper use of AI requires you to learn from the works of others as well understanding about how the AI works and what it does. More often than not you end up with something that is just baffling.

I also shot images of Lego to create storybooks for my children and the wide community of Instagram. I’m not entirely sure about their use. But since Gunilla Bergström used actual images from various sources for her Mikko Mallikas-books I guess that’s more ok.

For me the AI tools are a great source of the sense of wonder – what can I achieve with them, and how stupid they usually are. They allow me to plan for the games in a different way than earlier. It doesn’t automatically mean that this way is better though. They allow me to ”play” without the gaming group’s presence.

Trying to solve the problems of the world is always something I’m rooting for and I hope that all of the opponents of AI art are as vigilant about other stuff going on around us. I feel like this is an important topic and that (mostly) all discussion about it is a way forward.

The use of AI needs to be clearly stated (this blog uses AI generated images and this post has two of them). It needs to be developed and studied further. But in the end it is consumers who decide what’s going to happen. If we demand traditional art and are vocal against the use of AI, we have some say in the matter. But we still need to discuess it further than ”it is just always bad and ripping of artists”. If you want to actually support the artists. By their work. Making noise is all fine, but it doesn’t support them any more that AI.

Oh, and btw. Google Translate uses AI for the translation as well.

ME: ”no eyes, eyeless, remove eyes”
AI: ”got you fam!”
